A Brief History
Colorado Springs began as the dream of General William Jackson Palmer, an ambitious promoter for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroads in the post-Civil War period. The first stake of Colorado Springs was driven in 1871 at what is now the downtown corner of Pikes Peak and Cascade.

When gold was discovered in nearby Cripple Creek in 1891, Colorado Springs found that it was surrounded by more than scenic wealth. Colorado Springs soon became a favorite depository for the hard working yellow mineral, and a favored place of residence for those it made wealthy.
In the mid 1900's, Colorado Springs and the military entered into a prosperous partnership. Camp Carson was established at the outbreak of World War II, and the North American Air Defense Command came in the early 1950's. The city was selected as the site for the US Air Force Academy in 1958, and Schriever Air Force Base was established in the early 1980's. Currently, more than 51,000 active duty, contract and civilian personnel work at the five military bases located in the Pikes Peak region.
In addition to the military, industry in Colorado Springs includes several hi-tech companies ranging from aerospace and biotechnology to defense and semiconductor manufacturing. Many non-profit and religious organizations are also headquartered in Colorado Springs.
