An advisory panel to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) voted to recommend additional booster shots be given to those fully vaccinated individuals who received an mRNA (Moderna or Pfizer) vaccine, considered to be high risk – immunocompromised. Immunocompromised individuals can begin receiving a third mRNA booster shot immediately.
The following list, which is not all inclusive, are examples of conditions that would qualify: Solid organ, stem cell or bone marrow transplant patients; cancer patients; HIV/AIDS patients; patients with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis etc.; patients who are on chronic steroid therapy or taking immunomodulating or immunosuppressive medication; patients with primary or hereditary immune disorders.
Patients will not need a prescription, proof, or the sign-off of a healthcare provider in order to prove they are immunocompromised and receive the additional dose.
Mixing of mRNA vaccines is permitted for the third shot if the original vaccine is not available. OPTUM Colorado Springs currently only has the Pfizer vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine may be given to those who initially received Moderna.
There is still no recommendation from the CDC or FDA about what to do with those individuals who received the J&J vaccine. We are awaiting further guidance from the CDC. We are also awaiting further guidance on giving boosters to all other populations. Please continue to check our web page for further updates.
Scheduling can begin immediately. Please call our OPTUM hotline at 719-463-5650 to make your appointment.
